In the Holy Listening Circle we share our spiritual experiences in the context of a progressive Christian faith community. Our goal is to learn from each other's questions and insights. Our online small group process is designed to help ensure that everyone has a voice and is listened to without judgment in an emotionally safe and welcoming way.
Below you will find 2 items: The first is the Scripture that Peter Jackson has chosen for our sharing time together along with a request for some pre-gathering work and instructions on how to approach it. What he would like is for each of us to write out our own paraphrase of Psalm 23 and come prepared to share them. If that is not something you can do. and he provides some excellent guidelines, then come prepared to share your reflections on the 23rd Psalm Secondly you will find the Zoom Link for Sunday morning. Psalm 23, King James version The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. One way of making a paraphrase of a piece of poetic writing is this: * read what the poet or psalmist wrote, trying to put aside for now all the memories you carry from hearing the piece before; * notice the structure: - the different sections and the focus of each section - the choice of images and metaphors in each section - the emotions and emotional shifts that are being expressed * notice and reflect on the thoughts, emotions and emotional shifts evoked in you; * paraphrase the piece using the original structure but your own words, images and metaphors to express the emotional essence in terms that resonate today; * reflect on your paraphrase and your process of creating it; consider what insights you have gained about how Spirit may be speaking to you. When you have made your initial paraphrase, you may choose to continue reflecting on it and tweaking it. That’s a completely normal part of the process as the poetic writing sinks more deeply into your being. When you feel ready, it can be helpful to share your paraphrase - or at least the insights you have gained - with other people. If you don’t have access to other people to share with, or even if you do, there is a sweet little collection of paraphrases of Psalm 23.
