Prior to the pandemic, Harcourt was engaged in a strategic planning/visioning process. There were a number of outcomes of the process, one being the decision to transition Harcourt to more of a ‘shared” community space. This involved Harcourt embarking on a project of re-vitalization in an effort to strengthen and renew our relationships with the Guelph community. Since the decision was made, we have been better utilizing the building space and land, assessing and evaluating needs, and having conversations with community individuals and organizations.
We see Harcourt’s building and land as a community asset. Our goal is to achieve a sustainable model to keep our building and land in use for the “common good”. This involves developing an inclusive, welcoming, respectful and safe place in our chaotic world. This means that church space is seen as public space. This space we are calling Harcourt Commons. Even though the space within the building will be shared with the church, there will be a separation from church activities and no-one is expected to join the church or support the church financially. Harcourt Commons will offer a range of activities and services beyond a place of worship. It will become a gathering place for the community. We are hoping that Harcourt Commons will look different and be experienced differently than what people have traditionally expected from a church, and that our public asset will endure for a long time into the future.
If you have any questions or concerns about Harcourt Commons, please get in touch with us through the church office. If you have ideas on how to enrich our project for the benefit of the community, please also let us know. We would love to hear from you!
